I find surprising joy in photographing parking lots and garages. I once experienced them as utilitarian places to get through quickly, but during the pandemic, without cars and people, they felt like quiet refuges.
In these spaces I see geometric forms, colors popping against the gray concrete, artificial lights that create an otherworldly mood, along with the markers of time, wind and rain.
I continue to photograph parking garages and lots, particularly when they are empty. A new space has endless possibilities and I imagine them unfolding as I ascend the ramps and stairs, hoping that my core optimism will be rewarded with an image of something striking or unusual or haunting, discovered in the most mundane and unexpected place.
